The Taiwan Passive Component Industry Association (TPCIA) successfully held its inaugural conference on January 14, 2022, declaring its official establishment. The formation of the association signifies the alliance and development of Taiwan's passive component industry, bringing greater opportunities and benefits to the industry.
At this inaugural conference, representatives from Taiwan's passive component industry gathered, including Professor Lee Wen-Hsi, the Chairman of the TPCIA Preparatory Office, Leu Jang-Hwa, Director-General of the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Su Huey-Jen , President of National Cheng Kung University, Wang Tan-Ru, CEO of Yageo Corporation, Lin Chih-Lung, Deputy Executive Director of the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre, and others. They came together to discuss important industry development issues. The establishment of the association aims to gather consensus on industry development, facilitate cooperation among members and international collaborations, and promote industry prosperity and progress.
During his speech, the Vice President mentioned that the Taiwan passive component industry has been developing for 50 years. Although it may not receive as much media attention as the semiconductor industry, it plays a critical role in electronic components and has achieved the second-highest industry output value globally.
The Vice President pointed out that under the leadership of Professor Lee Wen-Hsi, the Director of the TPCIA Preparatory Office, and with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and National Cheng Kung University, the industry association is officially established today. He expressed his honor to witness this historic moment and conveyed President Tsai's gratitude for everyone's efforts. He wished the conference a complete success and the industry a bright future. Furthermore, he emphasized that passive components have the potential to become another pillar of Taiwan's industry, following printed circuit boards and semiconductors, and he hopes that the industry's output value can eventually become the world's highest.
The Vice President provided three suggestions to achieve this goal. First, the TPCIA should serve as a bridge between the government and the industry, reflecting industry needs and providing recommendations to the government. This will ensure that government policies, regulations, and budgets support the industry's development and address various challenges, thus achieving more with less effort and continuous improvement. Second, the association should play a role in connecting industry, government, academia, and research institutions, promoting the development of advanced technologies and the manufacturing of high-end products. This will enable the industry to leap to the forefront globally.
The Vice President mentioned that passive components, initially mainly used in audio and video products, have continuously improved their technology in response to the progress of the technology industry and society. With the increasing demands of semiconductor, 5G communication, electric vehicles, and automotive electronics, it is crucial to adapt passive components to high frequency, high power, and high-temperature stability requirements. Particularly, advancements in high-end multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) can secure a significant market position.
Furthermore, the Vice President highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts among the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors, forming a "national team" for passive components. Sharing technological expertise will contribute to continuous growth. It is not only the industry sector but also academia and the government that need to make efforts together, maintaining a coordinated formation and achieving remarkable added value in output. This will pave the way to become the global leader. He sincerely hoped that this goal could be achieved soon, with everyone's joint efforts.
